Meet the key to self love
Love yourself, love your inner child.
We all have a little child inside of us, wanting to make contact, wanting to be heard and loved. This inner part of our being holds so many of your secrets - our dreams, our desires, our pain and our fears. They also hold the key to our happiness, self love and empowerment. When we don't have a strong and loving connection to her or him we don't have a strong connection to us and feel lost, needy and look to external resources to fill the void.
When we spend so much of our time disconnected and unaware of this important part of ourselves, we look outside for answers when they truly are right inside of us. I have grown so much since I discovered my inner child and I have seen so much success with my clients when they learn to communicate with this part of themselves. It truly is remarkable how powerful it really is.
One of the biggest and most significant developments in my healings and journey of personal growth has been meeting, understanding and formulating a relationship with my inner child. I really don’t know what I would do without her and looking back across my life can see how not having this relationship played out.
Getting to know your inner child is a complete game changer.
I remember a few years ago, it was close to Easter and I was really trying to cut back on sugar. But of course when I went into the supermarket there was chocolate everywhere. Me, and my inner child just looove chocolate and as soon I was surrounded by it wanted it. So I decided to do an experiment and see how all this inner child stuff works. I had a chat to my inner child and I gave her a big hug and told her how much I loved her and how special and amazing she is. I then told her how we weren’t eating chocolate because it’s no good for us and that we want to be healthy and happy. I kept chatting to her as I walked around and by the time I got the register my (our) desire for chocolate had completely disappeared! The chocolate was just a need created because I wasn’t giving myself attention and love so I was seeking it outside. And this is how it works.
When we connect with our inner child we start a journey of self-discovery and self-love like on other.
When we connect with ourselves on this very deep level we start to fulfill our own needs. We feel content and loved, appreciated and valued and we no longer seek these things from outside of ourselves. We know our voice is being heard to and that our needs and fears are being listened to. We no longer feel the need for validation from others as we start to understand that true validation can only come from ourselves. All the things you read about, about how to listen to yourself, how to love yourself all makes so much more sense when you are connected with your inner child. And it’s so much easier. It’s easy to talk to yourself, most of us are doing it anyway.
Ways to love and connect with your inner child
Watch funny movies, do silly things.
Tell them you love them.
Remind them of all the good things you can do.
Stand up for yourself.
Learn to say no.
Learn to say yes.
Be authentic. They know when you aren’t.
Don’t take life so seriously all the time.
Do things that make you happy.
Talk to them. This can be an internal dialogue or you can try journaling with them. Put the pen in your non-dominant hand and let your inner child speak to you.
Play. Ask them what they want to do and do it. Buy a colouring book, go to the park and swing on the swings, dance around your living room, get a puppy, take a holiday.
Don’t do scary things.
If you have to do things that are difficult or make you uncomfortable then have a chat to them and let them know you have their back and that you know it scary but you have to do it and you will do your very best to keep them safe.
Watch your self-talk. Every time you tell yourself you are stupid or that was stupid you are saying that to them and it hurts.
Rest. Remember both adults and children need down time and sleep.
Make a habit of remembering them, connecting with them and doing the above.
When you are lost and don't know what you want in life, ask your inner child. When you are confused, unbalanced and out of sorts check in with your inner child and you will be surprised at what they will tell you. They join the dots, they give you insights that you never thought possible and can shine a light into the dark depths of your unconscious so you can see what needs to be healed, addressed or acknowledged. They really are your most powerful ally, your best friend and your greatest love.
But it does take practice and commitment. As with everything and all relationships it does take time.
But once you have established this connection you will find it is the most important relationship you could ever build. After all what is more important than the relationship you have with yourself?
Reconnect with the most important person in your life - YOU!
